Note: There are two minor issues on disc one of the Bill Evans set. Please see my note in the description box. They are momentary and minor and do not detract from the overall beauty of this recording.
The rarest of records for this record store day was a jazz release by Sahib Shihab, “Shahib’s jazz party. First re-release as the original will cost you thousands. I was at one record store and call another and when they told me they had a couple of copies. The record store that I was at got none delivered to them. I dropped everything in my hand and ran out to go and get it. I went half way across town to get it. I got lucky and got the last copy as it was hidden under another record. It is also an RSD exclusive. I also picked up the Jazz Dispensary, Max Roach and the Charles Tolliver Music Inc. release.
Reviews like this are what we love you for scott! I’m not really by many independent record stores, but hopefully I can get my hands on that Bill Evans!
Thanks for the review. The Bill Evans release is the only I really want so I will most likely be standing in line for that one, despite the fact that it’s supposed to be around 2 degrees that morning here in anchorage!
I figured I had enough Bill Evans RSD stuff in my collection, and skipped right past this. You had me at 9 minute Nardis! 😂Thanks for the heads up, as always!
Many thanks for talking about these 5. Usually I am not excited about RSD releases mostly due to being digitally processed and of lesser sound and/or pressing quality.. Although, the Bill Evans and the Al Jareau may be worth given a listening test.
Thanks, Thomas! I too feel the same, and don't get too excited about these type of releases for the same reasons. But in this case I felt strongly enough about the Bill Evans release to feature it. It rises above but is not quite the audiophile effort we’re used to. I think a lot of fans will be happy with it though.
Well I hope you can score one! Please read my pinned comment and note in the description box for more information. If you do get it, I'd love to know what you think!
Thanks for the heads-up on a couple of the soon to be released albums for this coming Record Store Day drop. As you know, I no longer have an analog front end as most of my listening is in the hi-rez/immersive physical product format (SACD, DVD-AUDIO, Blu-ray and DTS). However, I still buy new CD'S if that's the only physical format available that I am able to play. That being said, I was able to pre-order the Al Jarreau and Bill Evans titles on CD via Amazon. I would prefer to support local retail but in this case this was my only option.
Thanks so much for the review Scott Resonance has always put out great stuff. The Eric Dolphy RSD was a revelation Was wavering on Bill Evans. My go to recordings will always be with Scott LaFaro and Paul Motian I’ve gotten nearly all the Bill Evans RSD releases - a little oversaturated Wish they would do his last live recording - Turn Out The Stars - Village Vanguard 1980 with Marc Johnson on bass - i dont think that was ever done on vinyl and it’s a 4 cd boxset with excellent improv
Frankly i was surprised at how much I liked this set. My last batch of releases from this source varied wildly in quality of source. These, and this one in particular are excellent sources. There is a minor issue with a low level buzz a couple of seconds long at the start of the show (see note in description box) but its smooth sailing from there, and with the quality of the performance, it is a non issue for me.
Über fan for decades. Overloaded with Bill's work. So, getting this isn't a priority but I'll check prices after tomorrow. Besides, I have the One-Step from Craft of Explorations ordered and waiting on that. 👍
Understandable. I'm in the same boat. Probably would not have picked this up if it wasn't a promo. I have a lot of Bill Evans to listen to. But I ordered the Craft cause I couldn't resist :-) Don't have any other copy and I'm a fan of the Craft One Steps!
Of those albums you mentioned, I would consider purchasing the Bill Evans and BB King albums. When I looked at the BF RSD list, I actually gravitated toward the John Lee Hooker Don't Turn Me From Your Door album and the Charley Patton Father of the Delta Blues: Selections from Paramount Recordings album. These albums are interesting for study. The Ramones Greatest Hits album (first time on vinyl) looks interesting too. I'm not really in the market for RSD albums right now; I have too many things going. I used to stand in line for RSD. I acquired some pretty nice RSD albums that way. In more recent years, I've bought them on-line from record stores that didn't sell the releases or were just selling the releases on-line.
Its a fun thing for me to see and experience unusual, never before heard recordings such as these. However, many are not from the best sources. In the case of almost all of these (Sun Ra excepted) I found them to be on a higher level than those I reviewed last time. The Bill Evans was the best, Al Jarreau next and BB King not far behind. They are not the audiophile type albums I normally cover but the Bill Evans In Norway was close. A couple of very minor, momentary issues was all I could criticize, but the performance was a thrill. If you stumble across either of the two you mentioned for a fair price, you might try them. I don't think I would pay a secondary market premium however because pressing and jacket quality, while ok for the retail price, did not warrant a premium price tag.
@@ThePressingMatters Unusual recordings are a lot of fun. Even if they're not in the best condition, we're fortunate to have them. If we step back in time to the truly historic recordings like the earliest blues, we discover records that have barely survived. Source materials are nowhere to be found; the records are taken from the few 78 rpm recordings known to exist. It sure is a joy to hear these treasured recordings from the distant past. Thanks for the tips on the records you mentioned. Have a great Thanksgiving my friend and enjoy the holiday with the gratitude it deserves. 💪👊
I completely agree, in the case of historical blues and early vocal recordings, we’re fortunate to have them at all. Wishing you a wonderful Thanksgiving my friend!
I don't have last year’s release so I can't tell you that. I will say that of the dozen or so RSD releases I've received from this source, I feel it is the top one in both sound and performance.
Oh I didn't mean that in a dismissive way! Probably not the best choice of word. I just meant her fans are very passionate, and will certainly appreciate this release
I also love Bill Evans and that sounds like a great one to own, although I'm not playing that Record Store Day game. The one thing that really annoys me about his and other old jazz music is the drums. So many times the drums to me are a distraction that takes away from the musicians I want to hear, like Bill Evans. Drum solos really tick me off, so needless to say I'm not a Gene Krupa fan, lol. Don't get me wrong, when it comes to rock it couldn't exist without drums, and percussion in classical. But jazz, not for me.
I generally prefer studio dates, but then again I love the Vanguard recordings. This one appeals to me in that it is an above average recording for this type of release. At times it feels like a studio session until some applause breaks the spell. The performance is wonderful too. I totally understand not doing the whole RSD thing. I hope the audio will eventually be available elsewhere for you to hear.
@@ThePressingMatters Yes, maybe on Apple Music some day. But for now I just got a dozen LPs from Music Direct so I have classical, jazz, rock and pop to enjoy. Have a great Thanksgiving!
Well, to be fair, I haven't ever acquired any of the other Bill Evans RSD, but I know he’s a perennial favorite artist for these things! So I got a little excited, especially since the sound was a cut above the usual from this source :-)
Note: There are two minor issues on disc one of the Bill Evans set. Please see my note in the description box. They are momentary and minor and do not detract from the overall beauty of this recording.

Awesome, I hope it was worth the effort! I had never heard of it.
I was fortunate enough to find the Bill Evans gem at my local RS. Can’t wait to listen!
I would love to know what you think about it!
Have you had a chance to hear it yet?
Remler and Evans are must haves! Thanks again for all you do. It is really appreciated.
You're very welcome! Please see my notes at the top of the comments and in the description box for additional info.

I hope you can grab one! Thanks so much for watching!
Great vid, as usual 🎉

Absolutely. Its a standout among these releases. Please see my pinned comment and description box for additional details.
Thanks Scott very informative. Best wishes 😊😊😊in

I will get it just for Eddie Gomez
I have to admit, he was fabulous on this set. Lots of opportunities to shine!
Alright, you’ve convinced me to get in line! Not for the first time, and not for the last time either I’m sure. Gobble gobble😊

CD might be a smart choice. The records are good but not perfectly quiet.
Thanks so much for the review Scott
Resonance has always put out great stuff. The Eric Dolphy RSD was a revelation

I dig Sun Ra.
Many do, and this might be a nice addition to your collection. Its quite well recorded for the time and circumstances.
The Bill Evens RSD releases rarely come cheap on the secondary aftermarket. If you want this record get in line and get there early.
So true unfortunately.

Joni Mitchel - Hejira Sessions
Yes - Fragile sessions
Jazz Dispensary
Are my top 3
I'm sure they are going to be illuminating. I may try and track down those, as I am a big fan of Hejira and Fragile.

Good grief Scott not more RSD/Black Friday Bill Evans... Found in a deep dark damp place lovingly restored by green backs. Sorry could not resist 🤣
